What diamond shape should I get?

Diamonds come in all different shapes. There is no shape that is better or worse than the other. It comes down to your personal style, the shape you gravitate to, and even the shape and size of your hand.

Are diamonds really rare?

The majority of diamond rough that gets mined is actually considered to be industrial rough. In fact, it’s about 80% of the diamonds that are mined. Since diamonds are one of the hardest substances on earth (now you know how it’s survived its journey to the earth’s surface) they can withstand extreme heat and exposure to substances making them the ideal choice. It’s the colorless diamond rough that is harder to come by. The lack of color in a diamond makes it more rare. In addition to a diamonds color; carat weight, clarity and cut also attribute to its rarity. However, Rarity does not mean Beauty. No matter the rarity, size, cut or clarity you gravitate to, I am here to educate and help you find the diamond that is right just for you.

At the end of the day it’s not the diamond that is rare it’s you!

How do I get the most value for my money?

When looking to buy a diamond, everyone wants to know the same thing…how do I get the most value for my money? So I wrote out a few tricks to help you spend your money wisely!

Top 5 ways to save money on your diamond:

1-Don’t buy from a retailer who’s mark-ups are based on their storefront rent:

Buying from Lusso means no added overhead costs have been added to your stone. We keep our costs of business down, that reflects in our prices.

2-Don’t buy a diamond with extremely high color, and clarity grades.

Unless your diamond is going to end up in a museum, there is no reason why you should spend more money on something you can’t see. The average diamond sold for jewelry purposes range from G-J color, and SI1-2 clarity.

3- Don’t buy based on weight.

You will find diamonds that are 2.00ct, vs. a diamonds that weigh 1.9cts can have a huge cost difference. Most of the time, this difference is invisible to the naked eye, so why spend the extra money on something you won’t notice?

4-Shop based on the person wearing the diamond, not what people tell you to buy.

Color grades look different on varying skin tones, if you have olive or darker tone your skin color, you can go deeper in color (like I-J color, and save so much more than if you bought colorless) and still look great. When a very pale person is wearing a diamond, if it has strong body color, you will notice it, so in that case, I would go higher in the color grade, and maybe lower in the clarity, but always staying eye clean.

5- Buying from someone who knows the tricks!

My job is to guide you and ensure that you get the very best diamond you can afford. As a native New Yorker and someone who has been living and breathing diamonds for years, I know how to navigate the process and land you the very best diamond for your budget.

How can i care for my diamonds?

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

Can you explain the 4 c’s of diamonds?

At Lusso, we actually call it the 5 C’s. A diamond’s quality is gauged on four factors: Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat. We added the 5th “C” for Concierge due to the fact that we make finding the right diamond for you easy and at your convenience.

What is important to know about picking a diamond through the 4 C’s, is that not every diamond with the same grade actually look alike.

Picture 3 men, each 200 lbs with brown hair and blue eyes. Depending on their birthmarks, features, and height, they will all look different, yet they share the same characteristics on their licenses. Similarly, let’s say 3 diamonds that are all graded 1.00ct G, SI1. The locations of the inclusions, the kind of characteristics, and other factors like fluorescence and cut can all change the overall look of the diamond.

The 4 C’s are important to understand, but not worth the over complicating your purchase. My goal is to educate you and more importantly show you the best way to manipulate these grades to get the most bang for your buck.

How can I hint at the ring I really want?

So maybe the time has come that you have discussed getting married, and now you can’t stop looking at people’s engagement rings! Don’t worry it happens to almost everyone. Now the question is… how do you get the hint to him so he knows what you like? I’ve been selling engagement rings for over 15 years and I have three great ways to hint at the ring you want.

First is Instagram! Start following designers and jewelers that you like and make sure to engage with their posts! Tag him on rings that you really like if you are comfortable! This is also a great way to see different styles and designs! I have had more men come in to me in the past few years showing me their girlfriends Instagram account than anything else.

Second, get family involved! Depending on your family dynamic this can be a game changer. Bring your mother, sister, or someone from his family to a store and try things on. You never know what you will like until it is on your hand! Rings are like clothes… you think you love it on the hanger then you put it on and it is completely different. Then it is in the hands of that person to get the information to your boyfriend. Also do not forget to get your finger sized! This is very important.

Third, and this is becoming more and more popular… go shopping together! Maybe don’t buy the ring together but go to the jewelry store and try rings on. This allows you both to see what looks good and what style you each like. Let him listen and take mental notes on what you like. Then ball is in his court!

How do you size my ring?

To most people this is a complete mystery. We are asked all the time if they will see where we size it, or if the ring will look the same. So let me explain…

First if the ring is a plain gold or platinum wedding band that has no stones and has never been sized it is easy and fast. We can either stretch or shrink your ring. To stretch a plain band, we put it on a mandrel and lower a lever that opens the mandrel slightly which then stretches the band in tiny increments. To shrink it is the opposite. We put your band laying down in a device that condenses the metal to make it smaller. Then a quick polish and it is brand new again.

Sizing a ring that has stones, like a diamond band or engagement ring, is very different. There are two ways it can be done. First is by using a very hot torch. The jeweler cuts your ring and either shaves off metal to make it smaller, or adds metal to make it larger, and then solders it back together using the torch. The only slight downfall is that when soldering with a torch, the heat is applied to a relatively large area resulting in heat transfer. Because of this heat transfer it is harder to work with certain types of stones that are sensitive to heat.

More recently most jewelers have upgraded to a laser solder machine. The first steps are done the same however this machine utilizes short pulses of high energy to melt metal in a fraction of a second. The heat used in the laser welding process is so localized that it results in seamless, and undetectable work that is not discolored in any way.

Most of the time you would never notice the difference between each technique. However, the laser gets much hotter than a torch ever will and makes the soldering much stronger making it the only option for Lusso Jewelry!
